Get ready for a prettier Netflix!

Netflix has rolled out a new update that extends their Super HD service to all of it’s customers. Previously, the company was only providing Super HD to those customers whose internet service providers partnered with it’s Open Connection service. Now, however, everyone can enjoy seeing their favorite Netflix shows and movies in exquisitely crisp and clear high definition.

Watch Crunchyroll Outside the US

We’re thrilled to announce that support for Crunchyroll support is finally here. We started rolling out support for this much requested service a few days ago but we didn’t want to tempt fate and announce it until everything was in the bag.

Using Crunchyroll from outside the US gives you a reduced catalogue of manga, anime and drama cartoons – but playmoTV customers are able to enjoy the bigger US version of Crunchyroll.

What is Crunchyroll?

Crunchyroll is an American service, focusing on East Asian media including manga, anime, drama and much more. Most of the content is available for free even though Crunchyroll offers a Premium membership which offers some great features like increased video quality, a larger lineup of shows and earlier availability for current shows (1 hour after they are aired in Japan)

For those of you are wondering what anime is, the direct translation would just be “Japanese cartoons.” Unlike US or European cartoons which are largely targeted at children, anime appeals to younger audiences with light (G-rated) content and to adults with more complicated, mature content.

Crunchyroll has a variety of Japanese anime and Asian dramas available for instant streaming. Crunchyroll has three premium plans, an All-Access Membership, and a Anime or Drama Membership. The All-Access Membership costs $11.95/month but the other two are $6.95/month.

Now also on Apple TV
Apple just pushed released a software update for its little black box, introducing a couple of new native Apple TV applications, one of which is your friendly neighbour Crunchyroll, much to the delight of anime fans in the US (and to anime fans and playmoTV users all around the world). We’ve made sure it’s supported but we do ask that you bear with us as it was announced yesterday.

Therefore, Apple TV support is still experimental, simply because there hasn’t been time to perform our usual tests that are quite extensive, to ensure that you guys don’t encounter any problems when using the service.

How to watch Amazon Prime Video outside the US

This post was updated on June 23 2020.

One of the most popular inquires we get from our users is that Amazon Prime Video isn’t working even though their device is linked to playmoTV DNS, whereas services like Hulu and Disney+ are running smoothly.

What’s wrong?
First of all, rest assured that we aren’t doing anything wrong. As far as Amazon is concerned, all playmoTV users are visiting the site from the US. And so the plot thickens.

Mostly hidden Apple TV features

I use my Apple TV a lot. I haven’t bothered jail-breaking it so I mostly stream Netflix and iTunes. Sometimes just before falling asleep I take my iPad and continue watching Netflix in bed before I doze off into dreamland.

UPDATE 2012-05-18: It turns out that most of the films rented from the Apple iTunes store also come with closed captions. To enable CC in iTunes content choose:
Settings > Audio & Video > Closed Captioning > On

It always bothered me that when watching Netflix on my iPad (or laptop) I could get closed captions (CC) but not on my Apple TV. Well, it turns out you can. By accident I held down the main button for 2 seconds when streaming Netflix on my Apple TV and immediately a new menu popped up allowing me to select the CC language.

This led me to check what would happen while holding the button down while streaming iTunes and it turns out if you do that you are presented with chapter selection menu similar to a DVD chapter selection.

So for you playmoTV beta users out there, who own Apple TVs, we recommend trying it out.

Rent movies from iTunes Store and watch on your AppleTV outside the US

So you just received your AppleTV (the little black box), hooked it up to your big flat screen TV, turned it on only to realise that your new and shiny gadget is unbelievably limited because you don’t live in the US. Welcome to my world.

I am here to tell you that there is a solution to your problem.

TL;DR – Too Long; Didn’t Read

This turned out to be a rather detailed blog post so if you just need a quick guide this is what you do:

  1. Sign-up for an US iTunes Account by searching for and installing any free iPhone/iPad app. This gives you the option to sign-up without a credit card.
  2. Buy an US iTunes Store gift card from
  3. Redeem your gift card in iTunes.
  4. Stream away.
