We were hoping this last fix would stick a little longer but unfortunately it didn’t. Netflix US is currently not streaming on playmoTV. See here for more information:
The team has been hard at work at playmoTV HQ doing everything possible to bring US Netflix back to your streaming devices. We are very proud to say that the team has been successful and US Netflix is back on all supported devices.
However, we need to be completely honest and clear here: This is most likely the last time we can add US Netflix. They are just way too serious about blocking Smart DNS services like playmoTV.
Because of this, we’ve put a lot more focus on other streaming services (psst… we are also secretly eyeing promising sports services). We want to make sure all playmoTV streamers have the best possible services available on all devices.
But for now, Netflix US is back on all our supported devices – so stream on!
P.S. You may need to restart your streaming device.
Oh boy, have we got good news for you, streamers. We’re always looking for new streaming services to give you the best content possible. We’ve just added three great new streaming options to the playmoTV gateway. Woo!
Like you probably noticed, Netflix made some changes to their system which affected our service. We’ve been in business since 2011 and learned a few tricks on the way, but due to these changes we were forced to turn off our Netflix Switcher.
Netflix announced earlier today that they are now operating their streaming service in 130 new countries including Russia, Singapore, India and Nigeria. Along with the 60 countries already supported, Netflix now has a presence most of the world with the notable exception of China, Crimea, North Korea and Syria.
What does this mean?
Netflix is making their service available to a bigger audience but the selection of movies and episodes for each country will vary because of different license agreements in different countries. This usually means a smaller and more limited selection but with some local flavor.
For playmoTV users however this means that we can and will add those countries to the Netflix Switcher which expands our selection greatly. This is the single biggest Netflix event since we launched playmoTV and we can’t wait to offer new content from 130 new countries to our users.
Last year we announced a new feature for playmoTV users dubbed the Netflix Switcher. License agreements for content is negotiated on a country by country basis which results in different offerings in each country. While the US catalog is twice as big as the second biggest catalog it doesn’t necessarily have the latest and greatest. For example Netflix does not own the right to stream the Hunger Games in the US whereas it is available for streaming in Brazil and Canada. Usually this also means that local content such as Top Gear: The Perfect Road Trip can be viewed from the UK only.
Updated 2014-01-07: We’ve added 5 new countries to the playmoTV Netflix Switcher. Belgium, Norway, New Zealand, Luxembourg and Iceland.
You can now switch between a total of 21 different Netflix locations using playmoTV.
Simply the Entire Netflix
What we are essentially providing is an easy way to watch the Entire Netflix catalog instead of a fraction of it – making Netflix more valuable to playmoTV users. For the past few months we have also been working on a new discovery tool to help our users find and discover great new Netflix content no matter where it is located in the world and no matter where in the world you are.
Here is a sneak preview
p.s. Please help us prioritize which countries to add first to our Netflix Switcher. Vote on twitter or our facebook page using #entirenetflix and the country you want.
Two days ago, Hulu started offering a commercial-free option to its subscribers for $11.99 per month. In its press release, the company stated:
“At Hulu, we pride ourselves on listening to our customers and giving them the best possible experience,” said Mike Hopkins, CEO, Hulu. “Many of our customers have asked us for a commercial free option, and so today we are excited to introduce just that. Providing more choice for consumers is fundamental to the Hulu experience, in addition to an array of choices in content and devices, our customers can now choose to watch with or without commercials.”
Furthermore, Hulu just secured a multi-year agreement with EPIX only days after Netflix let it go, but that deal will bring blockbuster hits like Hungar Games:Catching Fire and The Wolf of Wall Street to its movie catalog, and acquired exclusive subscription streaming rights to a number of hit shows, the most notable being the 90s sitcom classic Seinfeld.
It will be exciting to see what this new subscription plan will bring to Hulu, but existing subscribers have often complained about frequent commercial breaks. When speaking to New York Times, Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins said:
“You can split people into two categories: ad avoiders and ad acceptors. There are clearly people who just are not going to buy Hulu because there are ads. We think we can bring them back into the fold with new content and this new choice.”
Despite calling it the commercial free plan, some shows will include a 15-second pre-roll ad and a 30 second post-roll ad. This list of shows may change, but currently includes Scandal, New Girl, How to Get Away With Murder, Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, Agents of SHIELD and Grimm.
Hulu explains in the FAQ section for the No Commercials plan that these commercials are necessary because it hasn’t obtained the rights to stream the shows commercial-free.
We are of course telling you this because you can access to Hulu anywhere in the world via the playmoTV gateway :)
If you have an Apple TV, I’m sure you’ve had to restart the device a couple of times, either to apply some changes or to fix some streaming issues.
The most common way to restart an Apple TV is by going to Settings > General, scroll down and click Restart. But that takes too long!
The fastest way to restart your Apple TV is by doing the following:
- Hold down the Menu and Down buttons on your Apple Remote until you see the indicator light on your Apple TV blinking rapidly (usually 6-7 seconds).
- When the light starts blinking, you can release both buttons, at which point it will stop, and the Apple TV will restart itself.
Here at playmoTV, we operate under a simple, yet very powerful idea; “the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people.”
What this means, in essence, is that we want to focus all of our energy on providing extraordinary service to our customers by supporting major and leading streaming services that are available worldwide.
In order to provide that service, we are not able to focus our energy on supporting small, niche streaming services that are available in very few regions, with additional restrictions. An example of this is ESPN. Not only is the sports station generally only available to stream in the United States, but it also requires a cable provider login. That means we would be investing time and resources into providing streaming for a services that will likely benefit just a small portion of our members. Those resources are better spent improving speed or adding larger streaming services or a host of other things. In short, we don’t want to support services that require extra signups or have a small regionally-based audience because it detracts from the excellence we expect from ourselves as we support large, established, multi-region streaming services.
We are all about the true cord cutting experience
Having said all that, we’re always looking for new services to add to playmoTV. If you have an idea for a service, let us know. We are happy to at least look into adding it.We were the first DNS provider in the world to add support for HBO NOW, and from the feedback we got from you, our members, we quickly learned that we needed to add Showtime as well. We did that as quickly as we could and it’s become a very popular source of programming for playmoTV users.
Thanks for watching!
We are just loving all the great new additions to the world of streaming which is making cordcutting a lot more fun.
The latest is Showtime, now supported on Apple TV, iOS, Roku and browsers via your playmoTV account.
Their series include Homeland, Masters of Sex, Episodes, Penny Dreadful, The Affair and some great Comedy specials, Docs and Sport Docs. You can also watch their live TV stream from both East / West Coast. A sometimes great option when you just want to tune in.
Showtime is a premium service, and costs $10.99/month with a free 30-day trial.
However, if you have an active Hulu subscription you can add Showtime for $8.99/month on top of your Hulu subscription.
How do I watch Showtime outside the US?
- Make sure you have an active playmoTV Account and that your devices are linked to playmoTV.
- Update your Apple TV and keep your iTunes Location set to United States.
- Download the Showtime app on your iOS device from the US iTunes Store.
