US Netflix is not back (UPDATED)

We were hoping this last fix would stick a little longer but unfortunately it didn’t. Netflix US is currently not streaming on playmoTV. See here for more information:

The team has been hard at work at playmoTV HQ doing everything possible to bring US Netflix back to your streaming devices. We are very proud to say that the team has been successful and US Netflix is back on all supported devices.

However, we need to be completely honest and clear here: This is most likely the last time we can add US Netflix. They are just way too serious about blocking Smart DNS services like playmoTV.

Because of this, we’ve put a lot more focus on other streaming services (psst… we are also secretly eyeing promising sports services). We want to make sure all playmoTV streamers have the best possible services available on all devices.

But for now, Netflix US is back on all our supported devices – so stream on!

P.S. You may need to restart your streaming device.

playmoTV Service Update

Like you probably noticed, Netflix made some changes to their system which affected our service. We’ve been in business since 2011 and learned a few tricks on the way, but due to these changes we were forced to turn off our Netflix Switcher.

Even more Netflix

The team has been hard at work adding new Netflix locations for the past weeks and making playmoTV work even better on all your streaming devices.

Entire Netflix - 6 new countries added

We’ve now got a total of 22 Netflix locations for you to switch between. Our latest additions are: Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, New Zealand and Iceland.

We are not done yet so please let us know if your favourite is missing from our list by voting on twitter or our facebook page using #EntireNetflix and the country you want.

For more information about the Netflix Switcher see:

One more thing…
We been asked a lot about the recent Netflix changes that they are blocking VPN, Smart DNS or any proxy services but we can confirm that playmoTV is currently streaming on all cylinders!

Netflix Everywhere… sorry China

Netflix announced earlier today that they are now operating their streaming service in 130 new countries including Russia, Singapore, India and Nigeria. Along with the 60 countries already supported, Netflix now has a presence most of the world with the notable exception of China, Crimea, North Korea and Syria.

What does this mean?
Netflix is making their service available to a bigger audience but the selection of movies and episodes for each country will vary because of different license agreements in different countries. This usually means a smaller and more limited selection but with some local flavor.

For playmoTV users however this means that we can and will add those countries to the Netflix Switcher which expands our selection greatly. This is the single biggest Netflix event since we launched playmoTV and we can’t wait to offer new content from 130 new countries to our users.

Netflix Switcher
Last year we announced a new feature for playmoTV users dubbed the Netflix Switcher. License agreements for content is negotiated on a country by country basis which results in different offerings in each country. While the US catalog is twice as big as the second biggest catalog it doesn’t necessarily have the latest and greatest. For example Netflix does not own the right to stream the Hunger Games in the US whereas it is available for streaming in Brazil and Canada. Usually this also means that local content such as Top Gear: The Perfect Road Trip can be viewed from the UK only.

Updated 2014-01-07: We’ve added 5 new countries to the playmoTV Netflix Switcher. Belgium, Norway, New Zealand, Luxembourg and Iceland.
You can now switch between a total of 21 different Netflix locations using playmoTV.

Simply the Entire Netflix
What we are essentially providing is an easy way to watch the Entire Netflix catalog instead of a fraction of it – making Netflix more valuable to playmoTV users. For the past few months we have also been working on a new discovery tool to help our users find and discover great new Netflix content no matter where it is located in the world and no matter where in the world you are.

Here is a sneak preview

p.s. Please help us prioritize which countries to add first to our Netflix Switcher. Vote on twitter or our facebook page using #entirenetflix and the country you want.

Christmas Movies on Netflix

We’ve collected some great movies to enjoy during the holidays on Netflix and shown you where you can watch them using our Netflix Switcher.

Not every Christmas movie is on Netflix (like Die Hard, one of our favorites) , but by switching countries the selection of Christmas movies gets noticeably better.

Our Netflix Switcher now supports 16 Netflix countries (and remember, you have to be on the same Wi-Fi as your preferred Netflix device when you switch countries, then close and reopen Netflix to see the new catalog).

Netflix’s Narcos – Plata o Plomo?

Netflix Narcos - Plata o Plomo?

Narcos, a drug-fueled look at the Medellin Cartel and its kingpin leader Pablo Escobar streaming in full on Netflix on August 28. Narcos was so successful that the streaming service announced a second season of the show would grace its electronic airwaves next year. The ten episode story arc of the show treats us to action, a good deal of adventure, and an ample helping of gangster violence. The show follows Pablo Escobar as he builds and runs his criminal empire throughout the 1980’s.

The show is big and epic because the man was big and epic as well. Escobar was, by far, richest criminal in history, raking in nearly $30 billion selling cocaine throughout the world, but in particular, to the United States. At it’s height, the Medellin Drug Cartel, smuggled nearly 15 tons of cocaine per day. Escobar and his group spent $1,000 per week on rubber bands to bind the nearly half a billion dollars per day that they were making. Ten percent of that total, by the way, had to be written off at the end of the year as “spoilage” because rats would sneak into the warehouse at night and nibble on the hundred dollar bills.

This was a big man who played for keeps and Narcos does an outstanding job of chronicling his life and times.Escobar is played brilliantly by Wagner Moura, who has been a film star in his native Brazil for many years. The story is told through the eyes of Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) a DEA agent and his journey to capture Escobar in the 1970’s. Murphy addresses the audience considerably throughout, helping the viewer get into the mindset of a criminal who, before he was killed by Columbian troops in 1993, brought nearly the entire country of Columbia to its knees.

Pablo Escobar

Will the real Pablo Escobar please stand up?

The best part about the show is that we not only see how Escober moves millions of pounds of cocaine into the United States, from production to smuggling, but also the political climate that makes this type of activity possible. Narcos does an excellent job of showing the viewer what a mess 1970-era Columbia really was, rife with corruption, bribery, and brutal murder.

Certainly for the adults in the house, Narcos is beautifully shot and depicts like no other piece, the odd dichotomy that existed – and still exists – with the American viewpoint on drugs. Holbrook’s DEA agent character narrates his quest to capture Escobar throughout the show as he and partner Javier Pena (played by Pedro Pascal of Game of Thrones fame) learn about drug enforcement and Escobar’s ways. Holbrook notes right from the outset that it used to be that a bust with a few pounds of pot was big for them. “Before long, we were seizing 60 kilos a day. They let us have 60 so they could bring in 600,” he says as the first episode kicks off.

The show also makes extensive use of actual footage from the time, including Escobar’s extravagant lifestyle and the aggressive hunt by both the US and Columbian governments to find him. Narcos is full of juxtaposition – the calm, relatively tranquil streets of the US, versus the bloody crooked alleys of Columbia. That dichotomy is never more apparent than with the almost cutesy depiction of First Lady Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” to drugs commercial as compared to a few scenes later where Escobar is hanging enemies from trees and having them photographed.

Narcos is a rollercoaster ride from episode one to episode ten and is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys fast-paced, thought-provoking historical dramas. While some of the stories are stretched a bit for television, the shocking and sad thing is, many of them are not. Pablo Escobar really was as bad as he is portrayed in Narcos and the DEA really was as far behind him as the show lays out as well. Even the show’s theme song is hypnotic.

Narcos is a must-see for the adults in the house, so stop reading and get to it! After writing this I’m itching to watch it again.

Funny Comedies on Hulu and Netflix

Funny Comedies on Hulu and Netflix

Louis C.K., Amy Schumer, Marc Maron… three names that pop right onto the brain when you start thinking about laughing in 2015. And honestly, what’s better after a long day at work then coming home and vegging out on the couch with some solid comedy – we feel you. So don’t worry, playmoTV wants to feed that need for some laughs and we’ve got a bunch of great options for you from network television to awesome hour specials!

Modern Family (Hulu / ABC / Netflix)

We’ve spoken about Modern Family before, but it’s worth mentioning again. Smart, engaging and undeniably funny, MOFY is now is slated to start its 7th season on September 25, 2015. Centered on Jay Pritchett and his extended family, including his second wife, stepson and new baby Joe, the story highlights the adventures of his thoroughly modern family.

Throughout the series, Jay has become somewhat closer to his son in law, Phil, who married his only daughter Claire, an insanely competitive and tightly wound blonde. Together, they have three children which makes for great comedy. Jay’s son, Mitchell and his husband Cameron, along with their adopted daughter Lily, make for some of the most hilarious lines in the entire show.

The reason the show has gone on seven seasons is because it’s hilarious – but more importantly, it tackles real issues. Jay’s acceptance of his son’s sexuality is a constantly evolving theme throughout and his moderately aggressive nature toward Phil – who wants nothing more than to please Jay – produces some solid comedy. And the kids are great too, as they tackle normal preteen and teen problems from high school love to searching for colleges.

The show has won several Emmy awards, most prominently “Outstanding Comedy” and we shouldn’t be surprised. It’s well written, superbly acted and the laughs are ever present. Showrunners Christopher Lloyd and Steve Levitan have noted that in the 7th season, the show will tackle more “teen issues” – don’t be scared away by that, adults. We’re sure it will still be great.

Where can I watch Modern Family?
Hulu: You can watch the latest episodes on Hulu.
ABC: If you can stand being a week behind the latest episode you can watch it on ABC.
Netflix: Seasons 1-4 on Netflix Brazil, France, Germany, Sweden.

Chappelle’s Show (Hulu)

Dave Chappelle’s sketch comedy show gained something of a cult following during its two and a quarter seasons on Comedy Central. Absolutely for adults only, Chappelle flexed his comedic muscles using race, religion and celebrities – really anything that was available to him, he made fun of and did so brutally.

The show dealt directly with subjects like drug use, prostitution and gun violence – this, combined with Chappelle’s use of racial epitaphs and sheer intelligence, make for an extremely smart and funny, albeit 18+, show. Critics have noted that the show was often stereotypical of the races or groups that Chappelle targets. While this is true, fans of the show and many reviewers have said that that was, in effect, Chappelle’s point. His comedy shone a spotlight on feelings that had been lying under surface in the United States, critics argue, for years.

The show opens with Chappelle delivering a short monologue introducing the pre-recorded sketch. After the sketch, a musical act – usually of the soul or hip hop genre – performed. The show only aired two seasons, followed by a third, truncated season entitled “The Lost Episodes” that was pieced together from completed sketches. Chappelle left the show in 2006 and went to South Africa for two weeks to escape public scrutiny. The tale at the time, was that he had a meltdown and quit the show entirely. In a 2014 interview with David Letterman, he noted that it really was more about spending time with family and no longer wanted to be directly in the spotlight.

The two seasons and three episodes that remain are, undoubtedly, one of the funniest shows of the 2000’s. Witty, brash, and undeniably offensive, Chappelle’s sketches unrelentingly offered laughs to his audiences. The comedy is still relevant, so be sure to check it out on Hulu today.

Where can I watch Chappelle’s Show?
Hulu: Seasons 1-3.

Stand-up Comedy Specials (Netflix)

Chappelle got his start as a stand-up comedian and there are some for whom the stage and mic are the only life they really want to know. And that’s great news for you, playmoTV subscriber, because Netflix has an incredible stash of hour long specials to choose from!
Start off your binge watch with Louis C.K.: Live at the Beacon Theater. The undisputed current kind of comedy highlights his own personal foibles and family issues for your pleasure. Louis rewrites his act each and every year, so each special is a different one. This special is definitely only for audiences that are over the age of 18 and okay with some serious language and adult themes. However, it is one of the funniest 60 minutes you’ll spend on Netflix.

Then take your binge along to Jim Gaffigan and Mr. Universe. He’s pale and no topic is too absurd. From hotel pools to whales, this 2012 Grammy nominee for Best Comedy bring the laughs from the first minute to the last.

Round it out with one of the best female comics of our generation. Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Chelsea Peretti, takes the 60-minute special to new heights and along the way, makes fun of the traditional “one mic and a stool” format. With dynamic cutaways and great pre-recorded comedy content, this special is a must watch.

Where can I watch these stand-up comedy specials?
You can enjoy a lot of stand-up comedy specials on Netflix, like the ones mentioned above. HBO Now and Showtime also has a good selection of stand-up comedy specials.

Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Wish Seinfeld was updated for 2015? Look no further, friend! Always Sunny in Philadelphia started its run on FX before making a trip over to FXX for its ninth season in 2014. You won’t find a group of actors, writers and producers more dedicated to their comedy then this bunch, mostly, because the actors are the writers and producers.

Rob McElhenney, who also plays Mac, writes and develops the show with Glenn Howerton, who plays Dennis Reynolds and Charlie Day, who plays what we think is the funniest character on the show, Charlie Kelly. Joining the bunch is Kaitlin Olson as Deandra Reynolds (Dennis’ sister) and Danny DeVito as Frank Reynolds (the Reynolds’ father).

The comedy of Always Sunny lies in the competent writing, incredible timing and relationship between the actors (McElhenney and Olson are actually married in real life) and the beautiful camera work. While much of the show isn’t filmed in the City of Brotherly Love, the show’s setting and comedic lines rely quite a bit on the passion for sports and the city itself.

The characters are, purposely, terrible, immoral and filthy human beings (likely just for adults here, too), and make for some great laughs. The show is always apply some type of hilarious event to the “The Gang” as they’re called. All in all, Always Sunny is certainly for adults only, but makes for some of the best comedy you can find these days.

Where can I watch It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia?
Hulu: Seasons 1-9.
Netflix: Seasons 1-9 on Netflix US, seasons 1-10 on Netflix UK. (Yup, season 10 is already on Netflix UK, ain’t that something?)

There you have it folks! Netlfix, Hulu and many of the other streaming services out there have some absolutely stellar comedy for you to check out! It really is a great time for comedy. Get to it, streamers!

Netflix vs Hulu Comparison

Let’s face facts. Streaming technology is the way of the future. You want content when you want it and traditional TV just isn’t cutting it anymore. When streaming services like Netflix and Hulu started out, entertainment executives and consumers alike brushed them off as if streaming was a silly fad. Industry execs did the same with the internet and email too…look where we are now!
